Exterior cleaning is not one method for every surface. Your siding, concrete driveway, and wood deck may need different treatment. Here is how we think about soft washing and pressure washing when planning a Columbus cleaning project.
What is pressure washing?
Pressure washing uses pressurized water to remove surface dirt and buildup. Cleaning products may also be part of the process. It is commonly used for suitable concrete surfaces, such as driveways, sidewalks, and patios.
The equipment’s maximum pressure is not the pressure every surface should receive. Nozzle choice, distance, surface condition, coatings, and the cleaning task all matter. Concrete, masonry, and pavers still need assessment before cleaning.
What is soft washing?
Soft washing combines cleaning products with lower-pressure application and rinsing. At Deep Ocean Clean, we use a soft-wash approach for suitable house exteriors rather than applying a driveway-cleaning method to siding.
The cleaning product and method must suit the material. Follow product-label directions and the surface manufacturer’s care instructions. Lower pressure does not make a process automatically risk-free.
Side-by-side comparison
| Consideration | Pressure washing | Soft washing |
|---|---|---|
| Main approach | Water pressure, sometimes combined with cleaning products | Cleaning products with lower-pressure application and rinsing |
| Typical use | Suitable concrete and other durable outdoor surfaces | Suitable siding and surfaces needing a gentler approach |
| Before cleaning | Assess material, condition, coatings, and equipment settings | Assess material, condition, product compatibility, and care instructions |
| How long results last | Depends on the surface and exposure | Depends on the surface and exposure |
Your home may need more than one approach
A house-and-driveway project may combine soft washing for suitable siding with pressure washing for suitable concrete. Wood decks and fences need their own assessment, especially if they have an aging finish or damaged areas.
Tell us about any coatings, repairs, loose siding, or fragile areas. For example, Georgia-Pacific’s siding care guidance tells homeowners to follow cleaning-product and equipment instructions and take care around openings and vents.
Set realistic expectations
Neither method guarantees zero damage risk or a fixed number of years before buildup returns. Shade, surrounding trees, moisture, surface condition, and everyday use influence the result. Cleaning also does not repair damaged siding, concrete, or wood.
